Article: The Grand Cambre: Its History

A versatile shoe with a refined aesthetic, both elegant and rich in character, the Basile has been a classic Septième Width for many years.

THE STORY

This ankle boot finds its inspiration in the boots of Indian riders initially intended for horse riding. It was brought back from India by the British military in the 19th century. A certain chemist named Charles Goodyear (father of Charles Goodyear Jr. who 30 years later invented the famous Goodyear sewn) will greatly participate in the development of rubber thanks in particular to the vulcanization process (a process which makes a rigid material more elastic) : this will allow the invention of elastic boots

London bootmaker Joseph Sparkles-Hall, official bootmaker to Her Majesty, will make a short version that will end up on the Queen's feet and propel her beyond the realm of fashion.

It was in the 60s that these ankle boots became a real fashion phenomenon. Indeed, John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles, while walking through the streets of London, found themselves in front of the Anello & Davide boutique and fell under the spell of a pair of ankle boots. They ordered 4 pairs and popularized it: this model became an essential in the men's wardrobe. He even took the nickname “Beatles boots”.

This type of ankle boot is generally called "Chelsea" in reference to the eponymous London district in which a large number of military personnel, during their evenings, wore these comfortable and dressy shoes on their feet.

THE TECHNIQUE

We also speak of “Grand Cambre”, because of the complexity of the leather bending operation which results from artisanal know-how requiring great technical skill.

Indeed, unlike ankle boots with straps (Ernest), laces (Marceau) or even zippers, the Grand Cambre is characterized by its excellent ankle support thanks to its elastics, which makes it particularly simple and quick. to put on. The upper is made from only one piece of leather, arched to shape, which provides optimal support. The latter is simply attached at the back by a thin strip of leather.

The large Basile Seventh Width camber is available in different varieties of leather, colors but also mounted on different soles: in leather or rubber like the waterproof, grippy and comfortable Dainite sole. These shoes are ideal for city dwellers looking for comfortable, multi-use shoes, rich in style and high quality.
